Contact was first established some 9,000 years ago, when the Maritime Gatherers shared the same coastal locations and resources with bands of hunters that descended from the uplands. Toward the end of the pre-Hispanic period, certain coastal locations such as Arica, Pisagua, the Loa River mouth, Cobija and the Taltal area became bustling meeting places, where different cultural and productive traditions could be found.  This ongoing contact led to the exchange of products from each environment, but also saw the exchange of goods manufactured by inland farming and pastoral communities, such as ceramic vessels and textiles.
