Between Antofagasta and Los Vilos, hundreds of these cut stones have been found in the shape of circles, rectangles, triangles and polygons. Surprisingly, geometric stone shapes resembling those found at Huentelauquén have also been discovered in association with very similar and relatively contemporary populations along the coast of California, in the USA. This similarity may be due to a common ancestry, though this connection has not yet been established. The red color of some of these stones and their discovery along with non-utilitarian artifacts or as grave goods, suggest that they had a ceremonial function.

The ancient inhabitants of the coast preserved a tradition of manufacturing geometric shaped stones, the function of which is unknown today.
