Ties that bind: The art of dyeing in the Andes – 1999

This exhibit focused on a set of pre-Hispanic Andean textiles decorated with polychrome designs made using the technique of tie-dyeing, in which tight knots are tied around sections of fabric to prevent the dye from impregnating a certain area or areas of the cloth. This technique has been used extensively around the world, and reached a high degree of complexity and sophistication among the indigenous groups of Bolivia, Argentina’s Chaco region and those of both northern and southern Chile.
