In contrast to the Andes region, Mesoamerica had a robust tradition of sculpture that often included larger than life sized human representations. The functions of these images of men and women changed with time and socio-cultural context, and they served both as statues to be worshiped and as guardians of tombs, where they were placed alongside the bodies of powerful and distinguished individuals.
