Chile’s northern desert had two broad areas of development in the past: one, in the Loa River and Atacama salt field, and the other in Arica and neighboring valleys. While the cultural development of both areas was similar, the aesthetics of their ceramic art went in different directions from the start. The first area preferred monochrome pottery and the second favored polychrome. These different options could have obeyed a need to show cultural or ethnic differences but also they could have been in response to different outside influences.
