Despite the abstract appearance of the designs painted on the Coclé style vessels, representations of different aquatic predators can be recognized, such as the hammerhead shark, the manta ray and the alligator.
Some authors think that these images were metaphors for the social and political structure of the lords from the Panamá isthmus, where apparently, competition for power, prestige and status among the different leaders was resolved through warfare.
