Piloilo
This stone instrument is a product of the Mapuche culture, which still inhabits the south of Chile, as it has done for perhaps more than a thousand years. The instrument itself has not been dated, but it is believed to be an artifact of the Pitrén culture, or a later era.
It is a roughly circular pan pipe with two irregular holes in the center apparently following the natural form of the stone. It has four closed tubes to allow sound production, but one tube is open and does not work. It can be played tube by tube to make melodies, or in a glissando, with the player moving rapidly along the holes.
The notes produced are F# and C; E is missing.
This piloilo was made by polishing and boring the holes.
Dimensions: 810 mm high x 670 mm long x 190 mm wide (approx 32” x 26” x 7”).
