A unique expressive pattern can be seen in Chavín pottery, that in some ways, introduces us to this society’s ideology and world view. The vessels representing animals and men, generally have bright, smooth surfaces, while the vessels portraying plants or fruits have rough and dull surfaces. So brightness and opaqueness, essentially opposing qualities, could symbolize the natural order for this culture, which separated and contrasted the animal and plant worlds.
