In the Intermediate Area villages were relatively independent. They had their own chiefs and engaged in constant disputes with their neighbors as well as ritual exchanges and alliances. These vestments were used more for communication than as protection from the elements. The people adorned themselves with an abundance of ornaments and bodily alterations that gave unique expression to each individual’s identity and social status in the midst of countless dialects and distinct ethnic groups.
