The portrayal of an erect man was common in Aztec imperial art. This statue should grip a baton or other object in his hands. The eyes and the open mouth should have had inlays, as well as the crack in the middle of the chest, a feature of cult figures since the Classic era. This opening was where the idols stone heart rested, as the receptor of the divine forces arising from the image.
