This Andean concept means ‘overturning of the world’ and reflects violent upheavals such as earthquakes and other natural disasters as well as invasions by other peoples. Andean societies therefore applied the concept to the Spanish conquest, which they interpreted as the inversion of the social and religious order known up to that time.
