Communication Systems

In the Andean past, ideas and stories circulated through visual languages expressed on material objects (such as quero-cups, textiles and ceramics), sound (such as music and spoken language) and kinetics (dancing to music and other choreographed movement). In this section we will explore the main features of these kinds of languages and how they operated. Each language was inscribed on an object and the nature of that object determined the kind of inscription. They include incisions, engravings, songs, poems and woven cloth, among other elements that can convey different kinds of content (icons, scenes, long narratives, etc.).

What are the characteristics of these languages? How did they operate? To answer these questions, we will show you how to recognize some of their characteristics and contents.
