Skeletal Beings

Representing death, these beings were the main characters in the World of the Dead. The skeletons of sacrificed prisoners were reassembled for the performance of the rituals that took place in this world. At other times, real individuals were intentionally mutilated to appear as skeletons, with their ears, eyelids, nose and lips excised. In this state they accompanied the Ruler, standing guard over his tomb, taking part in processions and playing musical instruments.
