The Ritual of War

Armed conflicts are a recurring theme in Moche art. Some scenes depict large scale, secular wars and military conquest such as those that allowed the Moche to expand quickly throughout northern Peru. Others, in contrast, display ritual combat in which the protagonists were young men, probably high ranking soldiers who had survived other battles. Clad in thick armor, the warriors protected themselves with their shields while attempting to strike their adversaries with war clubs. The contest concluded when one of the combatants lost his helmet after being struck by his opponent. Many of the competitors are shown bleeding from the nose, probably from being struck. The winner grasped his adversary by the hair as a sign of victory.
