Journey to the world of the ancestors
The tomb was not the Ruler’s final destination, but was a way station on his voyage to the World of the Ancestors. To arrive there, the Ruler had to undertake a dangerous journey, meeting forces that sought to keep him among the dead and others that helped him along the way. This transition also required non-reproductive sexual rituals, in which skeletal beings masturbate, sometimes assisted by women, who were living or dead. Masturbation was a rite of passage that marked the boundary between the non-fertile anal copulation practiced during the Ruler’s journey to the World of the Dead and the fertile, vaginal copulation performed in the World of the Ancestors.
