The art of being Diaguita

Ways of “being Diaguita” in Inka times

Around AD 1400, the Inkas conquered the Norte Chico region and incorporated the Diaguita into their Empire. The artistic skill of the Diaguita potters in the centuries before that time allowed them to masterfully reproduce certain Inka ceramic forms as well as decorative elements and techniques introduced by the conquerors. The fusion of these two ceramic traditions and the manufacture of Inka-style objects with local materials attest to the different ways in which the Diaguita identified themselves as both subjects and allies of the Empire.
