The art of being Diaguita

Sounds and melodies accompanied Diaguita ceremonies and rituals

The discovery in some burial sites of flutes, whistles and bells alongside utensils for the consumption of hallucinogenic substances suggests a strong link between music, psychoactive substances and shamans or other individuals dedicated to healing practices. The zigzag lines engraved on some musical instruments and drawn at the corners of the mouths of some figures in Diaguita ceramics—as can be observed in these small vessels—seem to represent the act of singing or chanting.
