The art of being Diaguita

The Diaguita and the “red metal”

Long before the Inkas arrived in the territory, the Diaguita were extracting copper from small mines and manufacturing items from that metal. The Inkas expanded the mines, increasing copper production and introducing new alloys to obtain bronze. This change in the production, use and importance of the “red metal” prompted the Diaguita to manufacture objects such as jewelry, tools and weapons in an unmistakably Inka style.
