Shamanic trance played a central role in “being Diaguita”
The Diaguita inhaled hallucinogenic powder to enter the supernatural world and connect with the entities that inhabited it. With a spatula they spread the appropriate dose on scallop shell recipient then inhaled it through a tube made especially for this purpose. The trance they experienced after consuming these substances allowed them to assume the identity of guardian animals to predict events and to cure—or cause—illness.
