Chimu, Labyrinths of a sacred costume
Challenges in preparing the exhibition
Over the years, the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino has succeeded in puting together an important collection of pre-Columbian textiles of great aesthetic and patrimonial value. The majority of these pieces were discovered along the arid coast of the Andes, where the climate permitted an astonishing degreee of preservation of fibers, weavings and colors. Time and usage, as well as handling and transport, however, have made these textiles fragile and vulnerable. Our institution has taken the utmost care to provide these artworks with the best possible conditions of conservation, according to the specific characteristics of each one of them. We feel that it is our obligation tu insure that the space where these works are stored or exhibited complies with the strictest conditions needed to avoid any further deterioration, and thus permit that these textiles can be appreciated and studied by future generations.
