Chimu, Labyrinths of a sacred costume
Color samplings
The register of the color of a textile is generally carried out when the piece is documented in a separate form with data that only the chromatic identification can provide. The objective is to establish the state of the condition of the colors at the moment the piece is recorded, as a reference for diagnosing changes or alterations in the colors during the exhibition of the textiles.
For the color register for pieces on exhibit, we use soft colored pencils on an acid-free cardboard. We follow the tables in The Munsell Book of Color – Matte Finish Collection (1977), which was specially suitable for the study of archeological textiles, as our reference.
We identified 76 colors in the three pieces of the ceremonial costume. The diagrams indicate the exact location in which the different tonalities were found.
